Gas Prices on the Rise in Metro Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Jackson

As the cost of gas continues to be a leading concern nationwide, Michigan is no exception. Metro Detroit’s gas prices average $3.58 per gallon, up from $3.50 last month. Ann Arbor averages $3.68, higher than last month’s $3.49 and last year’s $3.53. Jackson averages $3.72, rising from last month’s $3.54 and last year’s $3.51. The highest recorded averages were $5.31, $5.27, and $5.19 respectively, in June 2022.

Michigan’s statewide prices continue to hold just above the national levels. The current nationwide average is sitting at $3.54 per gallon, just below Michigan’s average of $3.63 per gallon, which is slightly higher than last week. Although residents of the Great Lake State are beginning to experience greater costs after the holidays, overall gas prices in 2024 are predicted to be lower than last year’s.

As always, prices are subject to market fluctuations like changes in demand, weather events, and geopolitics. Increased domestic production bodes well for lowering costs here at home, but as we enter an El Niño year with a predicted increase in hurricanes and other extreme weather events, we may face unexpected prices at the pump.
